About the Role
A Homework Tutor serves as a positive role model and peer support for kindergarten, elementary, middle school and/or high school students. Homework Tutors may work as multi-subject or single-subject tutors in general group or small group settings or one-on-one. Specific subject support for elementary, middle and high school students may include mathematics, language arts, science and others.

B.O.O.K (Building Our Own Kids) Academy is a free community service provided through the Maranatha Outreach Center nonprofit in San Jose, California. The B.O.O.K. Academy afterschool program is a literacy, enrichment and STEM program that offers free literacy instruction and homework support, with other STEM and hands-on enrichment activities to encourage a student’s love of learning. We provide a positive, safe, and quiet atmosphere for students in grades K—12 to excel in their academic studies.
Responsibilities
Provide general homework assistance and more intensive single/multi-subject tutoring as needed
Work one on one with participants as needed
Help participants to understand the activity
Model how to do the activity
Support participants during transition periods from one activity to the next
Monitor participants during free time activities
Promote and stimulate program participation
Assist youth with goal setting and skills development
Create an engaging environment that fosters a sense of belonging for young people
Ensure student safety by assisting in set up, break down, and ongoing maintenance in an effort to keep the study or community site clean and orderly
Identify student needs and communicate to Site Director and/or Lead tutor as appropriate
Establish and maintain rapport with the participants, instructors, and parents
Qualifications
High school/college student or retired or working professional with with strong math and English skills
Demonstrates a high degree of initiative, self-direction, and creativity.
Demonstrates strong organizational and communication skills.
Exhibits professionalism.
Maintains excellent working relationships with staff, volunteers and public.
Must be able to demonstrate ability to work with people from diverse racial/cultural/socioeconomic backgrounds.
Candidate must be legally able to work in the united states
Ideal Candidate
Experience working with school age children
Experience working as a tutor
Time Commitment:
Must be able to commit to Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00pm-7:00pm for a minimum 3 month commitment
